Youngstown State University, also known as simply YSU, is an urban research university located in Youngstown, which is the county seat of Mahoning County, in the US state of Ohio, with a population estimated at a number of more than 82 000 inhabitants, during the 2000 census, fact which makes it the 8th largest city in the state.
YSU traces its roots back in 1908, YMCA established a school of law within the Youngstown Association School, in 1921, the school being renamed Youngstown Institute of Technology. In 1928, the institution's name was changed to Youngstown College, finally, in 1955, the university adopting its current name, as an indication of the school's broadening curriculum.
Since it first opened its doors to students, the university has significantly grown, claiming today more than 77 000 alumni, having an enrollment of approximately 14 000 students, offering various degrees in numerous fields of study, through several colleges and schools, which include: The College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, The College of Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics, The Bitonte College of Health and Human Services and The School of Graduate Studies.
YSU's athletic teams are known as the Youngstown State Penguins, who compete in NCAA Division I, in the Horizon League and Missouri Valley Football Conference, in various sports for men and women, including in baseball, basketball, cheerleading, soccer, softball and volleyball, among others. The sport in which the Penguins have been particularly successful in, and most recognized for, is football, in which they won four national championships, and in which they have sent 20 players to the NFL, two of which (Tim Johnson and Marcus Mason) are currently playing.
